Examination of the accounts of medical dreams in the Hippocratic Regimen 4 and comparison of the case histories inscribed on stelai at Epidaurus with Epidemics 5 and 7 reveal that in dreams were one battleground on which the struggle for authority and self-definition was waged as medicine sought to establish and maintain its status as a tekhnê in the face of competing paradigms of healing, encroachments from other arts, and a rising class of poorly trained physicians or charlatans posing as iatroi.
